Business Lawyers Miami : UM Law Alumni Spirit of Achievement Award  are bustling around on campus this week can be ascribed to a single big deal — homecoming.

With all the fanfare it can muster, the University of Miami’s Homecoming 2011 is set to launch across campus, with most events taking place later in the week. As usual, there will be receptions, dinners, sports events and other activities to mark the occasion.

BUSINESS-LAWYERS-MIAMI-UM-LAW-ALUMNI-SPIRIT-OF-ACHIEVEMENT-AWARD.pngThe law school will kick off its own homecoming celebrations on Wednesday, with its second Law Alumni Association Golf Tournament at the Melreese Country Club.

On Thursday, the Alumnus of Distinction dinner at the Biltmore Hotel will honor Robert H. Traurig, JD ’50, a founding member of Greenberg Traurig, a Miami law firm established in 1967 that has grown into one of the largest firms in the United States, with about 1,800 attorneys in 32 locations in this country and in Europe and Asia.

On Friday evening, class reunion receptions will be held for six classes: 1971, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996 and 2001. The Black Law Students Association and the Society of Bar & Gavel will also hold social events.

On Saturday, several other graduates are to be honored at the Breakfast and Morning Spirits event, where the keynote speaker will be Kathleen M. Williams, JD ’82, a judge on the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Florida.

The award recipients include Marjorie Baron, JD ’92, who will receive the Thomas Davison III Memorial Service Award. Baron served as assistant general counsel and special assistant to the chief judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit.

Philip Bloom, a former trial judge in the same circuit and an adjunct professor at Miami Law, will receive the Henry “Lat” Latimer Leadership and Professionalism Award. Bloom is being recognized for “exemplary leadership” as a mentor and for a career that is marked by “scholarship, honesty, kindness and service.”

The President’s Spirit of Achievement Award will be given to David Magilligan, JD ’07, and Jane Muir, JD ’09. Magilligan practices in the areas of civil and criminal litigation. While at Miami Law, he was president of the Student Bar Association for two years. Muir, a partner at Muir & Associates, is a trial attorney who focuses on civil litigation and personal injury. Muir also volunteers as an assistant coach for the Miami Law Mock Trial competitions.

The M. Minnette Massey Moot Court Award will be given to Jaret L. Davis, JD ’99. Davis graduated magna cum laude from Miami Law, where he was a member of the executive editorial board of the University of Miami Law Review. He also served as a member of the Moot Court Board and was the Catsman Fellow for the School of Law’s Center for Ethics and Public Service. He was also the first African-American Chief of the Iron Arrow Honor Society, the leading such society at the University of Miami. He is now a managing shareholder at Greenberg Traurig.

Jerry M. Markowitz, JD ’74, a former president of the Law Alumni Association, will receive the Past Presidents Award.

Homecoming culminates with the Hurricanes vs. Duke football game at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
